- Professionals often use steam to clean grout. A powerful steam cleaner can blast the dirt out with heated water vapor with up to 95 pounds of pressure per square inch. Steam can kill germs and remove mildew and mold. Because it is chemical-free, it is safe and leaves behind no harmful residue. Pour water in the receptacle and let the steam cleaner heat it up. When ready, point the nozzle at a 45-degree angle against the grout that needs steaming. Turn on the machine to apply pressurized steam on the grout lines, then move the nozzle in a downward motion. Use a damp cloth to wipe away remaining residue.
- Using chlorine bleach is the most common method to clean grout. It shouldn't be used with colored tiles or grout, however, because the bleach could affect their color. Mix one part chlorine bleach with 10 parts water and apply the solution by scrubbing onto the tile grout. Rinse thoroughly to remove dirt. Allow air to circulate by opening the windows and doors to prevent irritation caused by exposure to fumes. If you have children or pets, keep them away from the cleaning area and its fumes.
- Oxygen bleach powder is safer to use than chlorine bleach. It will not harm colored tiles and grout, like chlorine bleach can. It is also safe for children and pets and won't emit any harsh fumes. Mix the oxygen powder with water, apply it to the tiles and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Scrub the tiles and grout gently using a soft scrubbing brush. Rinse with water thoroughly.
Hydrogen peroxide, which also does not emit fumes, can be substituted for oxygen bleach powder or chlorine bleach.
