Step-by-Step Guide for How to Draw Cats

    • 1). Draw a medium-sized circle somewhere near the middle of your page to act as the guideline for the cat's face and head. Sketch a large, peanut-shaped oval beneath the face guideline to represent the body outline. Use light pencil strokes until you are confident in the basic proportions.

    • 2). Notice how each different limb of the cat is pictured in the reference guide and construct each of the legs. Make sure that the joints bend in the appropriate manner, using a circle to connect the oval-like shapes of the upper and lower legs. Draw a flattened oval at the bottom of each visible leg to act as the paw guideline.

    • 3). Divide the cat's face into four equal sections using a cross. These sections will help you create the proportional layout of the eyes and nose. Sketch a small, upside down triangle at the meeting point of all four of the facial sections. Add small circular openings in the bottom corners of this to create the nose.

    • 4). Draw two small ovals above the nose to represent each of the eyes. Lightly sketch a small circle inside each of these ovals to act as the pupils. Add a semi-circular line above the eyes to portray the areas where the eyebrows are on the face, even though these details are often faint with the coloring of the cat's coat.

    • 5). Draw a rounded W-like shape underneath the cat's nose to act as each of the cheeks, or upper portion of the mouth. Create the bottom of the mouth with a semi-circular line underneath these cheeks. Draw jagged, horizontal lines out from the cheeks, as these will be the cat's whiskers.

    • 6). Use rigid lines to create the furry texture of the cat's face, following the basic outline of the cat's head. Draw triangular ears on the top of the head, exactly as they are proportioned in the picture. Smooth out the top of the head, between these ears, to complete the facial detailing of the cat.

    • 7). Use small, rigid lines to add the furry appearance to the chest and front legs of your cat drawing. Draw little, vertical lines on each of the front paws to divide the toes. Add small, pointed triangles on each of these toes to represent the claws.

    • 8). Use light, wispy lines throughout the underside of the cat's belly. Create the hind leg using two slender ovals in an L-shaped connection. Draw the paws in a similar fashion, making sure that they are positioned according to the cat's stance.

    • 9). Streamline the back of the cat, making sure that the hairy texture is not quite as noticeable as the face and chest areas. Create the tail of the cat using a long, snaking tube that wraps around the cat's body. The end of this tail should be rounded.

    • 10

Trace all intended lines with an ink pen to create a cleaner appearance, making sure that all of the hairy lines are detailed carefully. Do not ink over any of the guidelines you used, as these are not necessary to the cat. Let the ink dry, then completely erase any remaining pencil marks. Color in each of the pupils with the ink pen.
