- 1). Use rubber gloves. This will protect your hands if you should have to stick your hand down into the garbage disposal and pull out any debris. Items lurking at the bottom can make this task a very messy one.
- 2). Check to be sure that the garbage disposal is not clogging the drain. Make sure that the garbage disposal is turned off and/or unplugged before you begin to unclog it. More than likely, your sink is clogged because food particles have gotten stuck and the blades on the disposer can no longer turn.
- 3). Stick your hand down into the disposal and pull out any food items that are causing the blade not to turn properly. After you have removed the waste, plug in and turn the disposal back on. If there is just a buzzing sound, the drain is still clogged.
- 4). Use a plunger. Turn the water on and plug up the sink with a stopper. You should fill up the sink with about 4 inches of water. Remove the stopper and place the mouth of the plunger over the sink hole. Start to plunge repeatedly in an upward and downward motion. Make sure that you are plunging the water back down into the drain. The plunger operates like a vacuum. As you plunge up and down, it sucks out any food particles that are clogging the drain.
- 5). Go to your local hardware store and pick up some drain cleaner. You will find endless types of chemicals to unclog your drain. With so many products on the market, you should be able to find something that will do the job. You can ask the store clerk what he recommends or you can do some Internet research on what is the best drain cleaner to unstop your kitchen sink. Also, if you do not already have a plunger or a snake, you should pick up these items as well. They will come in handy if you ever have another clogged drain.
- 6). Use drain cleaner to remove any other particles left after you have plunged the sink. Pour contents of drain cleaner down into the drain and let it settle for about 20 to 30 minutes. Most drain cleaners are made with chemicals that can break down tough food particles. Use the plunger in conjunction with the drain cleaner to ensure success at unclogging the drain.
