How to Use a Drop Spreader

    • 1). Read the instructions on the fertilizer to determine how much product is recommended for your lawn size. Weigh fertilizer using a standard household scale.

    • 2). Adjust the spreader's opening according to the manufacturer's recommendations for the type of fertilizer you're using.

    • 3). Clean the spreader. Empty out old fertilizer and debris and brush out any remaining dirt. Spray movable parts with lubricant if necessary.

    • 4). Inspect the spreader's switch to verify that it's in the "off" position. Fill the spreader's compartment with the appropriate amount of fertilizer.

    • 5). Push the spreader to one corner of the lawn and turn the spreader's switch to the "on" position. Push it around the perimeter of the lawn, then walk in parallel lines back and forth over the lawn. Overlap lines slightly at the edges to ensure full coverage. If an obstacle prevents you from walking in a straight line, push the spreader around the edge of the obstacle and continue moving in straight lines whenever possible.

    • 6). Push the spreader around the lawn, ensuring you have covered all areas. Stop when there is no more fertilizer in the spreader's hopper.
