Trans Fat = Bad Fat in Your Diet

What exactly is trans fat? Simple...
the result of hydrogenated oil.
Hmmm...
interesting..
..
So,what is hydrogenated oil? Well, to be honest it's a chemially modified monster that we have created by forcing hydrogen into the oil so that it gives a longer shelf life to the food it is in.
So, what does this mean for our diet? This act of forcing hydrogen molecules into oil has long term effects that far outweigh the short term benefits of keeping food fresh.
The fully hydrogenated oils do not have the by product of trans fat.
However, the partially hydrogenated oils do produce trans fat as a by product.
The New England Journal of Medicine in 1999 released findings that link hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oil consumption to diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (to name a few of the "big" ones).
This is not "new" research it has been common knowledge for decades now, and still we refuse to avoid them.
There are even some European countries that are legally banning the use of these oils in the foods that are sold.
Trans Fats or PHO are found in anything from fried foods to snack foods.
Typically foods that are processed and more often the boxed foods in grocery stores.
Trans fats and hydrogenated oil foods are not our friends.
So, stick to the outer walls of your grocery store...
that is usually where the healthier foods lie! Here are a few facts about common illnesses that these oils and trans fats are responsible for:
  • Cardiovascular disease - when hydrogen is forced into the oil, it makes a semi solid product.
This product increases LDL (the BAD cholesterol)which in turn coats the arteries with plaque and it actually lowers HDL (the H-happy or good cholesterol).
  • Obesity - eating products with trans fat versus other types of oil will cause more weight gain.
Over 300,000 people die in America each year with obesity related illnesses.
  • Dangers for Diabetics - Blood vessels can be damaged by high blood sugar that cannot be controlled.
Carbohydrates tend to exaggerate blood sugar and make it difficult for diabetics.
Cholesterol levels that are high from eating trans fat pose an even greater threat to diabetics.
  • Multi Infarct Dementia - this is a disease that is linked to high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.
This condition is a result of multiple strokes (often "silent strokes") to the brain that decreases blood flow and causes brain damage.
There are typically no symptoms until patients begin showing Alzheimer-like symptoms.
  • Increase in inflammation - According to a 2004 Mayo Clinic study trans fats and hydrogenated oils are directly linked to system inflammation in women that degenerates into coronary disease, diabetes, and various other health issues.
