Before tissues were popular, handkerchiefs were commonly used for the same purposes. Today vintage handkerchiefs can be found collecting dust in attics and basements or for sale at antique stores and yard sales. Some vintage handkerchiefs feature intricate designs and patterns not found in cloth stores today. Rather than throw out vintage handkerchiefs use them for more than just personal hygiene. - A vintage handkerchief can be used to create a baby bonnet. The bonnet is worn for events such as a christening and can later be used as a wedding handkerchief. The wedding handkerchief can fulfill the requirement for the bride to have something old on her wedding day. The handkerchief can later be used by the bride to make a bonnet for her own baby, who will one day use the handkerchief in her wedding.
- A vintage handkerchief can make an innovative pouch for holding potpourri. Pour potpourri into the middle of an open handkerchief, then pull the corners of the cloth together. Tie the bundle together with ribbon or string and place anywhere in a room. The handkerchief adds a vintage look to a room and disguises the source of the potpourri.
- You can pass down a vintage handkerchief by wrapping a gift in the handkerchief. The item being gifted, of course, needs to be small enough to be wrapped in the handkerchief. Avoid putting items such as chocolates inside the handkerchief since they can stain the cloth.
- You can make vintage curtain valances using matching vintage handkerchiefs. Drape the vintage handkerchiefs over the rod and clip them in place with vintage clothes pins or other types of vintage fasteners to give the room an old world touch.
- Depending on the size of the vintage handkerchiefs, you can sew a dozen or more together to make a patchwork tablecloth. The tablecloth will create a vintage feel and makes a great conversation piece.
