Adventures and Interesting Camping Safari in the Maasai Mara

Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve, which adjoins Tanzania's Serengeti National Reserve, is named for the tribe of people who are indigenous to the area The Maasai. The Maasai also known as the "Maasai" are a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. The Maasai are among the best known of African ethnic groups their distinctive customs and dress. They are related to Dinka and Nuer, and are also educated in the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania.
The Maasai mara reserve covers an area of just over 1500 square kilometers of mainly grassland and raises 1,500-2,170 meters above sea level. It hosts over 95 species of mammals and 570 recorded species of birds. It's about 270 km from the capital Nairobi City and takes about 5-6 hours by road or 40-45 minutes by flight. The road is great for the most part but there is a section from Narok town to Sekenani Gate that is dirt road but fairly good. The other road through Lemek and Aitong town is not good at all and very bumpy.

The Maasai Mara Wildebeest migration was recently named one of the Seven Wonders of the World and Maasai Mara got the top honours at the World Travel Awards as the best game reserve in Africa. The annual wildebeest migration has been taking place for more than a million years and international film makers have been documenting it for several decades. They migrate from Tanzania to Kenya; from Serengeti to Maasai Mara. The herds of wildebeests attract all sorts of predators providing the amazing scenery where they're hunted and killed especially by crocodiles when crossing rivers.

Arguably the jewel of Kenya's Wildlife Sanctuaries, Masaai Mara hosts the annual wildebeeste(gnu) and zebra migration of over 2 million animals between Kenya and Tanzania during the months of June-October. The wildebeest population is estimated at 1.5 million. However, they normally graze with zebras and gazelles which consist of approximately 550,000 of the figure. There are two wildebeest species in Africa. The blue wildebeests are native to Tanzania and Kenya while the black wildebeests are native to Botswana and South Africa.

It has a healthy population of big cats, particularly lions, cheetahs and leopards. Visitors to the park can see all the members of the Big Five as well as giraffes and in the rivers there are large populations of hippopotamus and crocodiles.

Tourists can choose to stay in either tented camps or lodges. A night under the cover of countless stars and the feeling of morning dew on your feet as you take in the crisp clean air of the morning is a reality that awaits you in the Masai mara.

Tents accommodate 2 people of the same gender or couples, 3 persons traveling together or a single person if you wish to have your own private tent at a small fee.

Kenya and Tanzania Safaris are great at any time of the year however April-May is the wettest time of the year and the great herds of wildebeest and zebra are concentrated and highly visible on the Serengeti.
November-December is the best time to see animals and migrant birds.
