How to Clean a Hayward Heater

    • 1). Remove any leaves or debris stuck in the vents on the outside of the unit. Wipe the outside of the unit with a damp cloth to remove dust, then wipe the unit with a dry towel.

    • 2). Remove the screws holding the heater's front door panel in place, and set them aside. Pull off the front door so you can access the burner panel. Inspect the flames coming out of the burner. They should be blue on the bottom, and between 8 and 10 inches high.

    • 3). Open the control panel, and turn the gas control valve to "Off." Turn off power to the heater, and turn off the water supply from the pool. Let the burners cool for two hours.

    • 4). Wipe the burner ports with a wire brush to remove any cobwebs or debris. Wipe the burner assembly with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Pull out any leaves, bird nests, or other debris you find in the burner section.

    • 5). Drain the heat exchanger, and remove the heater integral vent. Unscrew the screws that hold on the side access panels, top rain guard, and the rear heat shield. Set the screws aside, and remove all four covers. Locate the front header, and disconnect the wires connecting it to the heat exchanger.

    • 6). Pull the pressure switch tube through the intermediate panel. Remove the thermostat bulb or thermistor, depending on your model. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the flue in place, and set the flue aside. Loosen the nuts holding the pool plumbing in place.

    • 7). Lift out the heat exchanger. Dip a wire brush in clean water, and scrub off any soot from the heat exchanger. Reinstall the heat exchanger, and reconnect the flue and pool plumbing. Reinstall the thermostat bulb or thermistor and the pressure switch. Reconnect the side panels, top rain guard, and rear heat shield.
