- 1). Unplug your weed trimmer if it is electric. Turn it off if it is run by any other source of power.
- 2). Press the trigger on any kind of weed trimmer to ensure that all energy has been spent before you replace the string. Removing any residual energy keeps you safe from harm.
- 3). Remove any grass or debris from the underside of your trimmer.
- 1). Every weed trimmer will have a method of locking the spool in place. The style varies slightly between models. For most, just push against the spool and flip open any locking mechanisms that exist to release the spool.
- 2). Lift the spool out of its housing.
- 3). Remove any old line or debris from the bottom of the trimmer so it is clean.
- 1). Loosen the end of the string on the new spool. Thread the string through the feed hole in the bottom of the trimmer.
- 2). Wrap the string according to the directions shown on the bottom of your trimmer. Models will vary slightly.
- 3). Place the spool in the housing. Make sure the line is coming out in the same spot the old line did. The spool will make a small snapping sound once it is in place.
- 4). Lock the spool in place and pull on the end of the string to see that it is feeding properly.
- 5). Turn your weed trimmer over and start it up to test it. Try each setting. If you notice something going wrong, turn the trimmer off immediately. Once you are assured it is working properly, it is ready for work.
