Due to the demanding nature of the work, substance abuse counselors must prepare for their profession by completing extensive and specific educational classes. Many colleges and universities offer programs designed to train students in the field of addiction counseling. Because licensing and certification requirements vary from state to state, potential trainees should know their state's specific procedures. - Most substance abuse counselors are required to have expertise in particular skill areas, known as the twelve core functions of substance abuse counselors. These functions provide the foundation for all of the counselor's interactions with clients. Classes in each of the following areas and procedures offer practical guidance for the substance abuse counselor. While there is some overlap of these functions, each addresses specific areas. (References 3) The 12 core functions are: screening/evaluation; intake/assessment; orientation/overview; treatment plan/goals; group or individual counseling; case management and coordination of services; crisis intervention; classes and education; referrals and resources; documentation; and professional consultation, either in-house or with outside professionals. - While specific classes will vary from school to school, most colleges or universities offer general classes in substance abuse. Introductory classes in counseling and addiction provide foundational information. Chemical dependency classes which focus on the disease and the recovery promote a basic understanding of addiction. Counseling theory helps the future addiction counselor determine which type of counseling role works best for her.
- Advanced classes such as legal issues, the consequences of substance abuse, and dual diagnosis issues related to substance abuse and mental illness enhance the basic information that counselors receive. Multicultural and family dynamics and intervention classes help counselors understand cultural and familial roles in substance abuse. Current issues classes review trends, diseases, gambling and other relevant issues. In addition, counselors may specialize in nicotine or youth services.
