Lindane Shampoo Directions

    • 1). Examine the hair and scalp closely to make sure it is infested with live lice. Empty egg casings or nits can remain on the hair shaft after an infestation is over. Lindane shampoo should only be used to treat live infestations.

    • 2). Read the Medication Guide that comes with Lindane shampoo carefully. It is required by law that the Medication Guide is provided each time Lindane shampoo is distributed to a patient.

    • 3). Wash your hair with your usual shampoo then dry your hair without using any products. Lindane shampoo must be used on dry hair, that is free of any creams, oils or any other hair products. Oils will make the Lindane shampoo penetrate your skin and possibly cause adverse effects.

    • 4). Wait one hour before proceeding to the next step to lessen the possibility of the active ingredient lindane being passed through your skin.

    • 5). Wear disposable latex gloves -- made of nitrile, latex with neoprene, or sheer vinyl -- and shake the bottle of Lindane shampoo well. Apply the shampoo to your dry hair and scalp, including the short fine hairs on the back of your neck. Use only enough shampoo to lightly coat the hair and scalp. The amount used should not exceed 2 ounces. Do not add any water at this time.

    • 6). Leave the Lindane shampoo on your hair and scalp for exactly 4 minutes. Use a timer or stopwatch to be exact. Do not wear a shower cap or cover your head while the shampoo is in your hair.

    • 7). Lather the shampoo after 4 minutes with warm water, not hot. Wash the Lindane out of your hair with warm water immediately after it lathers. Be sure not to leave any shampoo on your head. It will not continue to kill lice and may go through your skin and cause adverse side effects. Avoid unnecessary contact of lather with any of your exposed skin.

    • 8). Dry your hair with a towel and immediately wash your hands thoroughly.

    • 9). Use a pair of tweezers or a nit comb to remove the dead lice from your hair and scalp. Ask someone to help you remove the lice from the back of your head.

    • 10

Close the bottle of leftover shampoo and safely discard it and the used gloves out of the reach of children.

    • 11

Wash all recently worn clothing, sleepwear, hats, bed sheets, pillow cases and towels in very hot water to avoid a second attack of lice.
