How to Paint Shadows Around Crystal Objects

    • 1). Sketch the main shapes of the shadows with a pencil. Observe the way that light passes through the crystal and creates secondary patterns of light and dark within the shadows. Sketch guidelines for those patterns. Note the hard and soft edges present in the image.

    • 2). Observe the colors created by the refractive and reflective properties of the crystal. The crystal and the shadows contain colors created from the light passing through glass of different thicknesses and bends combining with the colors of background objects.

    • 3). Select transparent artist paints made from single pigments to mix colors that will match those in your crystal shadows. Apply the color with a brush, softening the edges where necessary.
