- 1). Draw an X on the floor and ceiling where you plan to install the granite column.
- 2). Check the straightness of the invisible line from one X to the other with a plumb bob. Adjust if necessary.
- 3). Draw the outlines for the top and bottom sections of the granite column on the ceiling and floor.
- 4). Slide the column into place. The shaft will not be coming into contact with the floor and ceiling at the locations marked. Sliding bases should still be near the middle of the column. Granite columns are heavy, so you might need an assistant to help with this step.
- 5). Try to rock the column to make sure it's level. If it rocks, then you need to insert a shim underneath the bottom of the shaft to level it out.
- 6). Install L-brackets around the top and bottom of the shafts to connect the shaft to the floor and ceiling. Use a diamond bit on a drill to get through the granite. Drilling pilot holes can help protect the granite surface, as well.
- 7). Slide the lower base down to the floor and the upper up to the ceiling. The base should have pre-made pilot holes that will allow you to nail them to the floor.
- 8). Check the upper and lower base carefully. Any gaps should be filled with a bead of caulk.
