- 1). Loosen the four screws holding the starter cover in place over the flywheel and starter. Lift the cover and the four screws up and away from the engine. Use the tip of the screwdriver to pop the cover up if it is stuck. Take the screws out of the cover and turn it over.
- 2). Unscrew the screw retaining the pulley to the cover. Take off the screw and the washer. Slide, slowly and carefully the pulley and recoil spring off the cover. Let the tension out on the pulley spring very slowly and put your hand over it to keep it from flying out unexpectedly.
- 3). Wedge the tip of the screwdriver underneath the hook of the pulley spring. Pop the hook off the pulley and slowly bring the spring out. Separate the spring from the pulley.
- 4). Set the new spring into the pulley. Turn the spring so that the hook is near the connecting point on the pulley. Grease the metal post the pulley and spring sit on the cover with the engine grease. Put them back onto the starter cover and tighten the retaining screw.
- 5). Pull about 7 to 10 inches of rope out of the pulley. Hold the cover and wiggle the pulley back and forth until the spring's hook catches on the pulley. Continue holding the cover and rope while you turn the pulley clockwise four to seven rotations until you feel the spring is tight but not overstretched. Let go of the starter rope and it should retract and stay tight.
- 6). Set the pulley and spring down, facing the flywheel. Tighten the four retaining screws.
