Shutter Basics For Digital Photography

The shutter speed is a very important part of photography that all photographers should know about.
Even if you are using a fully automatic camera, understanding the basics of it will help you out as well.
This article will show you an intro to what the shutter is and how it works.
The shutter of your camera is what controls the amount of light that is let into your camera.
Have you ever wondered why when on automatic mode, sometimes it takes a long time for the photo to take and other times it goes by fast.
This is because of the shutters speed.
The amount of light let into the camera effects how the photo will look.
More time for the light to be let in will make the photo brighter.
And less time will make the photo darker.
This can be used to your advantage.
Fast shutter speeds are great for scenes with lots of light.
Slow shutters are used for scenes with low amounts of light.
For example, a faster speed would be needed for a scene at the beach with lots of light.
A scene in the woods and trees covering the sun will need a longer exposure as will a photo indoors.
This is just the beginning of what the shutter can do for you.
It is also a very wonderful way to take action and fast paced photos.
It can be used to make cars lights blurred at night and even be manipulated to freeze rain mid air.
