- Students must not only respect their teacher, but each other as well. Begin a lesson in respect with a test. Have the student ask a few questions of herself. True and false questions, or rated questions, are more likely to get honest answers then direct questions. For example, make a statement such as "I resolve issues peacefully" or "I am considerate of other people." Include the words "true" and "false" next to each statement and ask the student to circle one. As an alternative add the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 next to each statement. Ask the student to rate how much each statement is like them, with "1" being least like them and "5" for the most like them. A teacher can use this test as the beginning a lesson in respect. The teacher can follow the test by asking a student to give an example of an act of respect.
- Teaching respect to your own child begins far earlier and requires a parent to lead by example. Without the structure of a classroom a parent uses intuition and creative problem-solving to teach respect. Reading a child a story about a lead character who learns respect is a creative means of relating the concept. Discipline is another means of teaching respect. Discipline is something personal to a household but a parent who stays calm and articulates why they are displeased will reap the reward of a respectful child. A parent also teaches respect by providing a child with a good example in respecting others himself. When a child sees a parent practicing respect he will mimic the behavior.
- Respect is an important part of professional relationships. This includes relationships in the workplace as well as respect for clients. In the medical field a doctor must show respect for her a patient to instill trust during medical procedures. In this case a patient does not earn a doctor's respect; the doctor gives respect and consideration by default. Other forms of professional respect include the respect an employee has for an employer. This type of respect must be earned. It can be cultivated by the employer by listening to employee's concerns, paying special attention to employee needs and maintaining a calm demeanor under stress.
- Teaching a pet to respect your authority is called obedience training and usually refers to dog training. A dog learns to recognize an owner's commands and respond accordingly. Consistency is key when training an animal. A pet owner keeps commands the same each time and shows the dog what she wants. Rewards are only given when the dog exhibits the correct behavior. In this way a pet learns respect through positive feedback.
