- 1). Flip the rug over and lay it flat on the floor. Smooth out ripples or bubbles in the carpet and make sure it is flush against the floor.
- 2). Use a putty knife to push all of the carpet fibers back through the split. Make sure that they are facing toward the floor so that they will be standing straight up when you turn the carpet back over.
- 3). Push both sides of the split together until they touch. Ask a friend to help you with this step. Start at the top of the split and working down, reattach the two pieces of carpet using the tape.
- 4). Turn the carpet over. Using an upholstery needle and matching thread, stitch the two pieces back together. Keep your stitches close to the base of the fibers and pull the split together tightly. Stitch the entire split area.
- 5). Use the same stitching process to repair any fraying edges. Trim frayed thread from the edge of the rug and restitch using an upholstery needle. Most stitches on oriental rugs loop around the edge of the rug. Match the stitch on your rug as closely as possible.
- 6). Vacuum the rug thoroughly. Splits can often cause the fibers of the carpet to get matted down. Hold the vacuum over the stitched split to pull the carpet fibers upward until they are standing up.
