- 1). Hold your property paint about 6 inches above the ground and move it in a smooth line. This marks the right and left edges of your path. The lines should be parallel and about 18 inches apart. You can include a few curves in your path to mimic a winding trail or make the path perfectly straight.
- 2). Push the blades of your sod roller into the ground at one end of your path. Push the roller along the path lines. The roller should peel the sod from the top of the soil. Discard or compost the grass when finished. You can also use the sod to cover bare patches in your yard.
- 3). Push the end of a flat-edged spade about ½ inch into the soil inside your path. Push the spade forward to create a flat, shallow dirt path about 1 ½ inches deep.
- 4). Place your bricks in the shallow dirt path. Work from one end of the path to the other, spacing the bricks about ¼ inch apart. Bricks should be perpendicular to the direction of the path and staggered so each row of bricks spans the gaps between the row of bricks behind it.
- 5). Pour masonry sand on top of the bricks, using only about a pound per 2 or 3 square feet. Sweep the sand so it fills the gaps between the bricks.
