Drawstring Bag Sewing Instructions

    • 1). Determine how large you would like your drawstring bag to be when finished, and then add one inch to the width and four inches to the height. These extra inches are for seam allowances and the drawstring casing that will be at the top of the bag. Cut out two pieces to those measurements of the fabric you've chosen.

    • 2). Sew the two pieces of fabric together. Place them together with the right sides facing each other and sew the two sides and bottom of the bag, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. On each side seam, you will want to stop sewing 3-1/2 inches from where the top of the bag will be. Diagonally cut the fabric at the bottom corners, being careful not to cut through the stitches you've just made. This will help to reduce bulk in the corners when you turn the bag right side out.

    • 3). Press the seams open with an iron. When you reach the top of the bag, press open the 3-1/2 inch unsewn sections to match the rest of the side seams. Create the top hem on each side of the bag by folding down the top of the bag 1/2 inch and pressing it, then folding down an inch and a half and pressing again.

    • 4). Create a casing for the drawstrings by sewing a straight, horizontal line 3/4-inch down from, and parallel to, the top of the bag, then sewing another line 3/4-inch below that. Repeat on the other piece of fabric.

    • 5). Turn the bag right side out, then cut your string or cord in half and thread one piece through the casing tube you've just created on each side of the bag. Tie a knot at each end of both strings to prevent them from fraying. You can then open and close the top of your bag by pulling or loosening the drawstrings.
