Who was Thomas Newcomen and what did he invent?

Thomas Newcomen used his blacksmith’s training to experiment with the creation of a steam pump, and in 1712 produced the Newcomen Engine, known as the Atmospheric Engine or the Fire Engine. Far more efficient than Savery’s device, the engine was used to pump mines clear of water. James Watt would later improve upon it. More on steam developments.
