Jamie is 9 and he has a dog.
The dog is a labrador who is very friendly and sociable.
Every day when Jamie gets home from school he takes his dog for a walk.
The dog's name is Harry.
Harry and Jamie like to go for runs in the park - Jamie is training for the cross country event at mid-term at the moment.
When he goes running with Harry he imagines what it will feel like to win in the races he is planning on entering.
He imagines how funny it would be if he could take Harry along with him to run in the races alongside him! The kids would be so jealous of him, but the teachers would probably be worried about the big German Shepherd running around at school! Not to mention breaking school rules.
Jamie and Harry slow down to catch their breath and take a sip of water from the drinking fountain in the park.
Jamie always carries a little fold-down bowl in his pocket, which he fills up with water for Harry the dog.
Harry laps the water gratefully and Jamie takes a swig straight from the fountain.
It's a hot late summer day.
They set off again at a walk this time, because Harry often needs to do his doggy business.
Sure enough within five minutes the big dog picks a spot to do a poop.
Jamie waits patiently and then picks up the dog poop with one of the dog waste bags that he carries in his other pocket.
Now he takes it to the nearest garbage bin and pops the bag in there.
All done, and nobody gets their hands dirty.
Jamie understands that dog poop can be actually harmful for our landfills.
Unlike some people who believe otherwise, Jamie has done his research on how dog poop can contaminate our water and bring bacteria around.
His father told him that if he wanted Harry, he would need to a responsible citizen and not let any poop behind for others to step on it.
Jamie agreed and he has never forgotten to carry dog poop bags whenever Harry comes along.
Dog Waste contains nitrogen and phosphorus and other bad components.
These nutrients make algae growth in lakes, ponds, and streams.
This limits light needed for aquatic plants to survive.
As the algae dies it uses up oxygen that is needed by fish.
After this, Jamie and Harry turn around and run all the way home.
Jamie is almost out of dog waste bags, so when he gets home, he is going to ask his dad to order some more from http://www.
