Before being declared as married, a Jewish bride and groom come through a series of steps each of which is enriched by specific rituals. It starts a week preceding the wedding date and this is a barring period during which the bride and groom cannot see each other. Another very interesting thing seen in a Jewish wedding is the veiling. According to religious tradition, a Jewish groom covers the face of the bride with a veil after they are escorted to the canopy (a tent under which the wedding takes place). This veiling ritual symbolizes that mental attraction and not physical appearance is eternal. Moreover, this ritual stands as a symbol of the groom guarding his life partner from all kinds of external hazards.

Breaking glass and breaking plate are another two very interesting rituals that do not only enrich a Jewish wedding spiritually but also add to the colors of the ceremony. The plate is broken by the mothers of the bride and the groom, which symbolizes their seriousness to the commitment of getting into a bond. Besides, the Jews consider the sound of breaking plate as auspicious. Breaking of glass comes as the concluding part of the wedding ceremony. It happens as the groom step onto a glass and breaks it by his body pressure. This ritual reminds the Jews of their eternal sorrow for the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. It symbolizes that sorrow is an integral part of life and it persists side by side with happiness. Besides, it conveys a message to the newly-wed couple that a marital relationship is as fragile as a glass and thus care should be taken to keep it intact.

Similar to wedding ceremonies in all religions, putting the wedding ring on the brides finger is the central point of Jewish wedding. It is done after the bride and groom sign the marriage contract formally. As the groom put the ring on the brides finger they are declared married and after that they share wine from a single container which stands as a symbol of sharing of things between two life partners.
