- 1). Sand the frame all over using sandpaper so that the paint has a slightly rough surface to adhere to.
- 2). Lay the frame flat and paint it the color of your choice. If you have a frame with a three-dimensional design, accent it with gold metallic paint in order to achieve an antique look. More than one coat of paint may be necessary if you are painting a dark frame a light color. Allow the painted frame to dry thoroughly.
- 3). Distress the finish of the painted frame by using steel wool to gently rub the corners and any other spots where you want the frame to look distressed.
- 4). Brew some coffee and apply it with a paintbrush to certain areas that you want to look darker or dirtier. This step is optional.
- 5). Scorch the edges of the frame, using a blowtorch to dark the wood and crack the paint. This will achieve the distressed look many antiques have. This step also is optional.
