- 1). Make your frosting with shortening and butter. Shortening is a stable fat, more so than butter, and will maintain the moistness of frosting both during storage and use. You'll want to use equal amounts of shortening and butter so that you get the butter flavor without the dryness.
- 2). Toss in a pinch of baking soda to the icing and mix well. The soda will keep the icing moist, so that it doesn't crack during storage.
- 3). Store your frosting in a sealed container in the fridge, and bring it to room temperature before using. When storing the frosted cake, cupcakes or cookies, store at room temperature and in a sealed container. This will keep air out, making your frosting stay moist.
