When I was growing up, I was a nerd.
Well, to be honest, I still am...
if not more-so.
I watched Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, you name it, if it had a low budget and was set science fiction, I watched it.
I was always enthralled in the technology and the simplicity at how the 'future' worked.
One click of a switch and a plethora of tasks was done by a computer, not an army of men.
Doctor Who's TARDIS travelling in time and space, the Empire's Death Star, and the Cylon Centurions, all captured my imagination and i'd spend hours watching and playing all of those shows.
Fast forward to today, you go to a grocery store, a bank, pretty much any where and you just walk in, right through the doors, they open for you.
Even the simplest speculative technology from those shows is on us today, and most people don't even realize it.
In the 1960's when Kirk and Spock simply walked through a door with that wonderful 'whoosh' sound, people were simply amazed.
I just did the same thing getting milk at the store this morning, at the store.
Then I did it again coming into my house.
I had a company install a sliding automatic door in my house.
Now like space pioneers Kirk and Spock before me, I simply walk into my kitchen and the doors open.
I understand that these doors are amazing for persons with disabilities and for barrier free access.
But the possibilities are endless, every door should be automatic and hands free.
Especially in today's germaphobe society where touching door knobs and bathroom door handles is a massive no-no.
It's time to continue to embrace Kirk and Spock and make use of our technology to simplify our lives, keep our germs to ourselves, and boldly go where people have gone before, but just not touch the door knob doing it.
Automatic doors will save the world.
