Kangaroo Island is a nature lover's paradise found to the south west of Adelaide and to the south of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.
It is the third largest island of Australia, after Tasmania and Melville Island and is home to fewer than 4,500 people yet visited by many, many people each year.
The people come primarily to see the other famed inhabitants of this island - from kangaroos and koalas to sea lions and a whole range of rare and endangered birds.
Kangaroo Island is home to the largest sea lion colony in all of Australia, which you can see by visiting Seal Bay Conservation Park.
You can see wide ranges of endangered and unusual native species at a number of sites, both wild and contained, on the island.
For example, many Australian native species can be seen and interacted with at Paul's Place Wildlife sanctuary, while those who love a wilder atmosphere and want to see the animals in the wild should head for one of the protected areas - Flinders Chase National Park for example, where you will see kangaroos, fur seals and a range of birds and other wildlife.
At Finders Chase you will also be able to see the incredible 'Remarkable Rocks'.
These rock formations look like they were sculpted by human hands but were in fact created entirely naturally.
The granite formations beggar belief.
Within this National Park you will also find another amazing rock formation, Admiral's Arch.
This iconic rock bridge is a designated geological monument.
A fur seal colony has established itself beneath the hanging stalactites of this landmark, and this is a great place to watch the baby seals at play in summer, splashing in the rock pools beneath the arch.
A scenic boardwalk will take you from the arch to the Cape Couedic Lightstation, a lighthouse that has been in operation since 1909.
There are other historic lighthouses to be seen on the island too.
One is the only square lighthouse in South Australia and its third oldest.
It is called Cape Borda Lightstation.
Another famous historic and scenic attraction on the island is the lovely Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, which you can climb for amazing views.
Those interested in the history of the lighthouse should visit the museum with its range of photographs and artefacts.
You could even stay in a heritage listed lighthouse keeper's cottage.
Kangaroo island has a range of other historic sites and museums to explore.
Kangaroo Island is a must-see if you are planning a visit to South Australia.
