How to Replace Shutoff Valves for a Leaking Toilet

    • 1). Turn off the water at the house's main shutoff valve and flush the toilet to empty the toilet tank. Loosen the (lower) compression nut as well as the upper supply tube nut.

    • 2). Twist and pull the shutoff valve until it comes off the copper piping as well as the supply tube. Also pull off the compression ring and the compression nut.

    • 3). Slide the new compression nut down on to the copper piping, as well as the compression ring (push down about 1 inch). Apply a small amount of pipe joint compound to the compression ring, then slide the new shutoff valve down onto the copper piping, and tighten the compression nut onto the shutoff valve.

    • 4). Tighten the top nut connecting the supply tube to the shutoff valve.

    • 5). Turn the house's main shutoff valve back on and turn on the toilet shutoff valve. The toilet tank should now refill.
