How to Rectify the Stiffness of the Focus Ring of a Camera Lens

    • 1). Remove any visible dirt, grime or debris from the lens. Use a soft cloth and take care to avoid the lens glass, as pressure from debris may cause scratches.

    • 2). Move the ring clockwise and counterclockwise a few times if possible. If the ring will not rotate at all, do not force it; however, sometimes moving a stiff ring can cause it to work more freely.

    • 3). Apply a small dot of gun oil where the focusing ring meets the lens. Work around the lens, applying one dot each quarter. Once applied, turn the ring to work the oil into the focus ring. Take care to apply only a small amount, as a loose focusing ring may fail to retain your focus settings.

    • 4). Send the lens to a camera lens repair specialist if the gun oil fails to lubricate the focus ring. Further repair attempts may involve disassembling the lens, which should not be attempted without professional tools and training, or damage may occur.
