- 1). Assess your game and determine what areas could use improvement. If you need more drive distance, your golf ball selection will be different than if you need to work on putting or controlling shots from the fairway. Deciding what areas you need to work on is vital to selecting the right ball.
- 2). Consider different levels of compression. According to Golf Equipment Source, "compression determines the reaction you experience when you strike a golf ball." Low-compression golf balls will not provide great distance, but will give you more control over the ball. These are great for improving short shots with your irons. High-compression balls will provide maximum distance, but can be difficult to control for beginning golfers. If your drives are very straight but you want to hit the ball farther, a high-compression ball can add distance.
- 3). Compare the materials used for golf ball outer coverings. Two materials are commonly available: balata and surlyn. Balata golf balls are softer on the outside, making them less durable but more controllable. Surlyn balls are more resistant to cuts and can provide more distance than balata balls, but are more difficult to control.
- 4). Research different dimple patterns available on golf balls. Dimple patterns will affect the height and trajectory of the ball in flight.
- 5). Select a variety of balls that have qualities you think will improve your game. Purchase a few sleeves of each kind of ball you want to test. Test each kind of ball from different distances and in different situations that you might encounter on the golf course. Hit the balls from the tee box to test their distance capabilities. Practice hitting each ball with your irons from the fairway, as well as the fringe of the green, to test control.
- 6). Choose a ball that will improve areas of your game that are weak. Make sure that any gains you receive from a specific ball in one area don't cost you a lot in other areas of your game.
