James Corbett Studio -- Beautiful Hair and Spa Pampering

About.com Rating

The Bottom Line

With so many hair salons in New York City, it's surprising that it took me years to find a true hair color master at a reasonable price. At James Corbett Studio, James works his hair color magic with a team of talented stylists to help cut, blow out, and beautify you.

In 2010, James and his team opened The Spa at JCS, which offers facials, massage, acupuncture, yoga classes, and more.

While the prices aren't exactly cheap, they are on the reasonable end of the Manhattan salon price spectrum and you get value for your beauty bucks with excellent service and beautiful results.

Pros
  • Hair color services from a master
  • Excellent customer service
  • Convenient Union Square location
  • Reasonable prices for a top Manhattan salon
  • Downstairs spa for additional services

Cons
  • Evening and weekend appointments can be hard to get on short notice
  • Ladies' restroom is downstairs from the salon near the spa

Description

Guide Review - James Corbett Studio -- Beautiful Hair and Spa Pampering

James Corbett was recommended to me by a top beauty editor, who told me to run (don't walk) to his salon. While I always take this guru's advice on beauty seriously, I wasn't expecting any miracles.

Over the last several years in New York City, I have done my share of salon hopping and have seen that the trendiest salons don't always deliver.

I have had some rewarding long-term salon relationships, but always ended up wondering if there was something better out there. I can be a difficult client. I have curly hair and I want a cut/color that will look good curly (90% of the time I'm too busy to style it), but also blow out straight beautifully when I feel like it. I also sometimes go months between visits when my schedule gets busy, so I don't want anything that requires camping out in a salon too often.

The Spa at JCS is fairly new and located just downstairs from the salon. They offer a variety of traditional spa services (facials, massages, manicures, and pedicures) and alternative therapies including acupuncture, cupping, Shiatsu, and yoga.
