Ben Affleck- Full Beard

Ben Affleck- Full Beard

Ben Affleck wears a full beard well. It's kept neat, trimmed and definitely not out-of-control. Although, it does take away his rather boyish look.

Christian Slater- Stubble Beard

The stubble beard like Christian Slater is wearing, isn't only an in-between stage for growing out to a full version. Many guys keep this look because they don't want to wear a ton of facial hair.

The good news is that you don't have to keep shaving and start over to get your perfect length. Philips Norelco Stubble Trimmer (read review) can get hair down to .04 of an inch.

Joaquin Phoenix- Crazy Beard

Joaquin Phoenix's beard is out of control. I think it looks more like a lion's mane because it's kept in such a circular shape. Combined with his sun glasses, you can hardly see his face.

John Gotti Agnello- Chin Strap & Soul Patch

The chin strap beard follows the jawline from one side of the hair line to the other that vary in width size. Sometimes, it's attached to a goatee. The modern version is trimmed short, but back in the 18th and 19th century it was worn long. Here, John Gotti Agnello dons a slim chin strap with a small soul patch.

Johnny Depp- Van Dyke

A Van Dyke is a mustache and goatee, which may not be necessarily connected like seen here on Johnny Depp. It's also been referred to as a French beard or disconnected goatee.

Robert Downey Jr.- Chin Strap Beard

This chin strap beard that Robert Downey Jr. is sporting is very unique with his other facial hair. First the goatee is very angular, shaped like an hour-glass, and looks as if it's going to connect to the mustache, but doesn't. If you wore this daily, you would have plenty of work each morning.

Shaquille O'Neal- Thin Goatee with Soul Patch

This thin goatee is the way to go if you don't want your entire chin covered in hair, like seen on Shaquille O'Neal. Since there is such little hair on the chin, I think it would only look good connected to a mustache. The challenging part would be to make both lines even, inside and outside.

You need a good razor to keep lines looking crisp. A big favorite men's razor is Gillette Fusion (compare prices).

Will Smith- Stubble Goatee

A stubble goatee shown on Will Smith here is the light version of the classic. A good way to test out wearing facial hair.

Jeff Bridges- Goatee

Jeff Bridges is wearing what you might consider a classic goatee. Although most men also wear a mustache, one without would still be considered a goatee. Although, I'd like to see this one trimmed down in length a bit.

If you need some help getting yours even, try the Goatee Saver (compare prices).

LeRoy Neiman- Handlebar Mustache

Jamie Foxx can really pull off a mustache. He wears it trimmed short and defined, just like his haircut.

Keep in mind you'll still be using a razor to get rid of the rest of your facial hair. Since shaving often creates razor bumps or ingrown hairs, it's good to keep a bump-fighting product on hand to get rid of them quickly.

Eddie Murphy- Mustache and Soul Patch

Artist LeRoy Neiman is wearing a handlebar mustache that gets it name from the way it arches out on the ends like the handlebars on a bike. His is on the thicker side and somewhat mild in its bend. You may have seen pictures with these mustaches that have a full curl at each end.

Most men's mustaches won't curve out on their own. They curl the hair out and hold it in place with mustache wax (compare prices).

Mario Van Peebles- Triangular Soul Patch

Eddie Murphy is seen sporting a mustache and soul patch. I like the way the outside angles of the soul patch meet the end of his mustache.

The shaving cream you use has much of an impact on the kind of shave you get as the razor you use. And even more so, when you're trying to create crisp facial hair lines.

On the high end there's The Art of Shaving Cream that is pricey, but is one of the best on the market.

If your budget is a bit tighter, Bump Patrol Shave Gels work well and won't break the bank.

Matthew Broaderick- Mutton Chops

Although soul patches can vary slightly in shapes and sizes, Mario Van Peebles keeps his in a nice triangle shape. Soul patches are almost always kept on the shorter side in length, otherwise they would start looking like tails.

Since you'll only be leaving a bit of hair and shaving the rest, you want to make sure you're shaving correctly and avoid those ingrown hair. Learn more: Preventing and Treating Ingrown Hair.

Jackson Rathbone- Thin Mutton Chops

Mutton chops, like seen here on Matthew Broaderick, are a style of side burn that go past the bottom of the ear. Elvis Presley wore mutton chops plenty of times, especially later in his career.

Jackson Rathbone's mutton chops are kept on the thinner side in width. And instead of creating a strong angle at the bottom, are more circular. I think this softens the look and keeps him looking in line with his age.

You'll be shaving daily to keep the rest of your face smooth. With frequent shaving many struggle with razor burn, more than others, especially if they have sensitive skin. Get tips: How To Prevent Razor Burn.
