Your backswing is probably the first and most important part of the game to master if you want to improve your ability enough to have a great round of golf.
If your backswing isn't up to scratch you are going to find it hard to actually have a good game.
Don't get me wrong you can still play with an average backswing but you will find that if you make an effort to enhance this vital skill your overall game will come on in leaps and bounds.
When you start working to improve your backswing you should focus more on improving your distance and form rather than trying to improve your power.
If you begin with a nice solid stance while you swing, which means the correct posture, as well as your shoes and the way you align with the ball you have a much greater chance of improving your backswing.
If you don't have a sturdy posture, you will end up twisting your body at the wrong moment and even worse you could end up having problems gripping your club.
As you can imagine these two issues combined can cause serious problems when trying to achieve a successful backswing.
Therefore the first thing you should be focusing on is always trying to ensure you have the correct stance, which will enable you to quickly and easily develop a good follow through for your swing.
If you are struggling with your stance the best thing you can do is take a picture, either set your digital camera to a 30 second delay and let it snap you once you have taken up your position, or get someone else to take a picture of you.
You can then compare this image with that of a professional golfer, this should make it easier for you to see what things you are doing right and more importantly make you aware of any flaws.
If for any reason you aren't able to do this I would recommend you to take a few lessons, working with a professional golf coach is by far the easiest way to perfect your stance.
What's more a coach will be honest and to the point, meaning as soon as they see any flaws in your stance they will pull you up and correct the problem.
The next aspect of your swing to be taken into consideration is the way you are holding your club.
Overextending your grip or holding the club wrong is going to cause some serious problems for your backhand.
You will have no chance to correct your backswing if you are not gripping the club how you should.
It's actually impossible, you'll encounter numerous problems which will inevitably lead to some serious frustration.
Many times changing the position of your hands by just a few millimetres can have such a profound effect in determining how well you hit the ball.
Finally the last key factor to consider when improving your backswing is that you have to swing the club straight back from the ball before you start to lift it off the ground.
Many golfers swing the club back and lift up at the exact same time.
This will not only make you hit the ball off centre, it will seriously hinder your backswing.
Always make sure that you swing the club straight back before you lift upwards and you will almost certainly see a big improvement.
You shouldn't find this hard to do it should feel natural.
As long as you remember to swing back before beginning to raise, you should find that your backswing greatly improves.
