Touch up your old garden accessories and raised garden beds to give your garden an updated look. Here are some DIY ideas to help you spruce up your garden.
Name Your Garden Planters
Give your terracotta planters a coat of fresh paint to restore them to their former glory. Consider adding simple patterns or motifs to personalize your planters. Painted name tags are a useful embellishment for garden planters. Decorate each planter with the name of the plant it contains to make it easy for you to identify the different species.
You can also do the same to your raised garden beds. It makes it easy to identify specific vegetable plots at a glance, even when the plants are still seedlings.
Turn Old Metal Pails into Planters
Aged galvanized metal pails can be turned into sturdy and stylish garden accessories with a little imagination. Always clean a pail thoroughly before using it for planting. Wash the pail with warm water and scrub with a stiff brush to remove any caked dirt or grime. Make a solution that is one part bleach and nine parts water. Use the bleach mix to wash the bucket before letting it dry in the sun. Make sure the pail is completely dry before using it as a planter.
Make sure your new planter has adequate drainage holes. Use a hammer and a nail to create three to four quarter-inch holes in the bottom of the pail. If you plan to use a plastic liner with your bucket, make the holes in the bottom of the liner and set a drip tray set at the bottom of the bucket to collect the excess water.
Metal buckets tend to heat up quickly in the sun so make sure you place them in an area where they receive an adequate amount of afternoon shade. Monitor the moisture levels carefully and water more frequently to compensate for the loss of moisture due to evaporation.
A galvanized pail planter is also very easy to decorate. All you need are acrylic paints, stencils and a few paint brushes. Use a broad paintbrush to apply one or two coats of paint. Add suitable decorative motifs like leaves or flowers with the help of stencils.
Revamp your raised garden beds and garden accessories using these simple and easy-to-follow instructions.
