School teacher Kelsey Peterson, 25, of Lexington, Nebraska apparently fled to Mexico to avoid charges of having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old student. She has been charged with kidnapping, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and will be facing federal charges of transporting a minor across state lines or a foreign border for sexual activity.
Update: Sentenced to Six Years
Peterson pleaded guilty to transporting a child across state lines to have sex. On September 29, 2008, she was sentenced to six years in federal prison and five years of supervised release.
At sentencing Peterson told U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp that she wanted to take responsibility for what she did, but that she was not a sexual predator. More:
