About Juan Montoya:
Juan Montoya is one of the country's leading interior designers, having won numerous awards and accolades for his achievements. He has been inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame, and the most recent one is being honored as a Design Icon by World Market Center Las Vegas.
Born and raised in Colombia, Montoya studied architecture in Bogota before graduating from Parsons School of Design, New York.
He returned to live and work in New York after two years of work and study in Milan and Paris. There he founded his own design business to embark upon a remarkable career that spans three decades.
Juan Montoya's Design Aesthetic:
Montoya started out as a Minimalist in his early years, and quite possibly it is that ability to distill down to the barest essentials has helped him gather influences from everywhere to design interiors for his clients that reflect their tastes and not just one style.
The most outstanding feature of his work is its eclectic nature that showcases elements from a multitude of established styles and cultures. Some cultures that inspire his work are those of Japan, Morocco, Scandinavia and the Americas.
He feels that a house should have a clear aesthetic language and unfold in a logical progression.
Elements of Montoya's Design:
While Montoya is not tied down to any particular style or period in his design, there is an underlying sensibility which distinguishes his work.
- His work is very tactile, as he likes to juxtapose textures and fabrics
- While the scale of furnishings must relate to the space, he masterfully builds a rhythm by mixing overscale furniture pieces with smaller ones
- Shadows play a role in how his spaces appear to the eye
- Refinement and simplicity through attention to detail
- Layering of color and texture
Juan Montoya Quotes:
“I consider myself a tailor who finds the best materials to clothe an interior in the appealing and comfortable way, down to the last detail.”
“Good design is all about detail. Whether it’s a pied-à-terre or a palace, you have to pay attention to every decision, every gesture. It’s what makes a home sing.” Architectural Digest
