Marriage is a Commitment

When you get married you are making a commitment to each other. What does that mean? It means that you are getting married pledging to do what it takes to make it work for life. Most people now days think that a marriage commitment is a pledge to get married only and then hopes it turns out good. A commitment is actually a pledge to getting married and to see the marriage through till the end.

Take a look at the typical marriage vow and in essence what it says is: To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish 'till death do us part. And hereto I pledge you my faithfulness.

It is a pledge till death do us part not till I get tired or till it is no fun any more. Most couple go in to a marriage not realizing that it will take work to make a marriage last, work everyday, they do not get that part. When something goes wrong they quickly pull the plug and get a divorce.

Before getting married the couple should have this basic understanding that it is forever. We will do what it takes to make it work or actually are we willing to do what it will take to make our marriage last? When you start with a solid foundation you will really think it through before committing. Can we make this marriage last with each other? Is this the right person? Do I know what I am getting into? With this kinds or questions asked you are making sure that it is well thought out and not a spur of the moment thing.

Marriage now days seem to young couples as the thing to do. Getting married seems like fun. Let me see who we can invite to our wedding? Oh this wedding dress looks so beautiful. I want the brides maid to wear this style. I want this kind of food at the reception. Look at that hair style. Who is going to throw the bachelor party for me? What kind of music should we play at the wedding? Where shall we go on our honeymoon?

Going into a marriage with these kinds of questions as the most important questions of the marriage is a recipe for disaster. After the beautiful wedding and the honeymoon they will be living in the real world with all the grinds that come with life. If they had not thought out the future together they will be in for a shock as the party feeling wears off.

Getting married is serious business and should be taken as such. If a couple will take the time to really think about what it really means to get married and what it will take to make it work then they will at least be going in it with their both eyes open. People spend more time planning and worrying about the wedding details than about the commitment of getting married to each other for life.
