- 1). Wash and condition your hair.
- 2). Apply strong-hold styling mousse or gel to your damp hair, working it in from the roots to the tips.
- 3). Blow dry your hair from underneath to create a lot of volume.
- 4). Roll up your hair in hot rollers. Using the largest size you have, hold a section of your hair straight up and roll from the ends to the roots. Continue until all of your hair is in rollers. Remove the rollers after three minutes if your hair curls very easily; leave them in until they are cool if your hair is hard to curl.
- 5). Gently comb through your hair with your fingers to separate the curly sections and blend your hair back together.
- 6). Gather a section of your hair at the very top of your head, about an inch back from the hairline over your forehead. This section should be 2 to 3 inches wide and no more than 2 inches deep. Hold the ends of the hair straight up over your head and apply hairspray liberally to the whole section, from the roots to the tips.
- 7). Back-comb this section of hair. Still holding the hair up, use a fine-tooth comb and insert it into the back of the section, about 3 inches up from the roots. Pull the comb down toward the roots. Do this several times; as the hair is combed down to the roots, it will get tangly and stiff. Move up toward the tips a few inches and back-comb again. Continue moving up until you reach a couple inches from the tips. Spray the entire section with hairspray again. Do not lay the hair back down when you are finished; leave it where it is and continue.
- 8). Gather another section of hair behind the first. Spray, back-comb and spray again as you did with the first section.
- 9). Gather one more section of hair behind the second. Spray, back-comb and spray again as you did with the first two.
- 10
Gather a section of hair to the right of the first section you back-combed. Back-comb this section, then do the same with a section of hair to the left of the first section. - 11
Comb out your hair. Very gently and patiently, move the top three sections of hair back to their lying-down position. Comb only the front of the first section of hair you back-combed. Don't comb through the tangle of hair, but rather comb just the outside 1/2 inch or so. Smooth this hair out over your head, combing other parts as necessary until you have a smooth top layer over the back-combed hair. - 12
Spray liberally with hairspray.
