- 1). Search for the food source. Knowing how to get rid of mice in your house begins with addressing the root of the problem. If you keep food lying around in your kitchen, this could be where the mice are getting their food. You should also check any closets or cabinets where you keep bird seed or pet food. If you find food items that appear to have been tampered with by mice, replace the containers to keep the mice from getting at the food.
- 2). Buy mouse poison and put it next to the food source that you secured in step 1. The mouse will be used to coming to this location to eat, and when they don't find their regular food source, they will be more likely to eat the poison instead of looking for another food source.
- 3). Place snap traps along the paths that the mice travel. Mice travel along the walls whenever they can. If you see mouse droppings along one of your walls, there is a good chance that mice have been using it as a highway. Set mouse traps along the wall and use peanut butter as bait. Mice are naturally cautions, and they can often remove bait from the traps without triggering them. Peanut butter makes a perfect bait, because it is sticky and this usually forces the mouse to trigger the snap trap.
