- 1). Lay out some newspaper to protect your work surface. Organize your paints, pencils and art supplies to make it easier to work.
- 2). Draw an oval similar to the shape of an egg. This will serve as the head of the seahorse. Draw a second, larger oval slightly lower than the first circle to form the body. Finally, draw a smaller circle beneath the first two that will serve as the lower part of the seahorse's body.
- 3). Outline the snout, tail, head and neck. The snout and tail should be long, with the snout coming to a point. Beginning with the snout, draw the body, using slightly jagged edges to form the body. Fill in the details of the next and head, such as the eyes and the mouth.
- 4). Paint your seahorse in your chosen color. Seahorses are highly varied in color and can be solid or patterned. Use either acrylic or oil paint. Oil paints take longer to dry than acrylics, which gives you the opportunity to adjust your work and correct any mistakes, but you will need to wait several days before applying another layer of paint for texture. If using acrylics, let your seahorse dry overnight; if using oils, wait several days for the paint to dry fully.
- 5). Fill in the details of your seahorse's eyes, snout and tail using a fine-tipped brush. Let dry.
