• Green is everywhere these days and now hotels are no exception. Many hotels are attracting eco-conscious tourists by becoming more green. Hotels are making improvements that conserve energy, conserve water and improve indoor air quality in addition to offering organic bedding and environmentally friendly bath goods. Some green hotels are certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) buildings, while others are inspected by other local or state agencies.

• The Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco was built in 2006 and was one of the first buildings to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's national standards for green building. The hotel meets LEED requirements for green buildings and is also certified by the Green Seal and the San Francisco Department of the Environment. The hotels offers rooms with either one king-sized or two double beds with hair dryers, CD players, satellite television, iPod docking stations and DVD players. All of the rooms are cleaned with eco-friendly products, use compact fluorescent lighting and have in room recycling stations. The bathrooms have water saving features and offer organic bath products. The on-site restaurant, Roots, offers organic and locally sourced dishes with an American Mediterranean fusion menu.

Allegro in Chicago

• The Allegro Chicago hotel is Green Seal silver certified and received the Mayor Daly Greenworks award. The hotel offers standard queen and king rooms as well as suites. All rooms have hairdryers, flat screen televisions with cable and iHome docking stations. The rooms offer mini-bars with organic choices and Aveda bath goods. The hotel uses eco-friendly cleaning products, energy-efficient light bulbs, a recycling program and serve organic, fair trade coffee. While the restaurant does not have an on-site restaurant, two adjacent restaurants, 312 Chicago and Encore, are affiliated with the hotel.

• The Proximiy Hotel in Greenboro is a LEED platinum certified hotel offering loft-stlye queen and king rooms. All of the rooms have hairdryers, coffee makers, microwaves and mini-refrigerators. Rooms are equipped with flat-panel televisions, CD players with MP3 connections and free high-speed Internet access. The beds have hypoallergenic bedding and Egyptian cotton sheets and the bathroom is stocked with Aveda products. The hotels uses energy and water conservation practices and uses a solar water heating system. The hotel was painted with low VOC (volatile organic compound) paint and the hotel has a green, plant covered rooftop. The hotel has an on-site restaurant, Print Works Bistro, that serves fine dining dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.
