Painting Antique Dining Furniture

    • 1). Remove the seat bottoms from the dining room chairs by turning them over and using a screwdriver to remove the screws. Set the seat bottoms aside.

    • 2). Sand the furniture with 100-grit sandpaper. This is especially important for furniture with a glossy finish, such as paint or varnish. Unfinished wood doesn't require sanding. Use a damp sponge to clean the furniture and remove any sanding dust.

    • 3). Apply a coat of oil-based primer with a paintbrush. It's OK if this coat doesn't go on perfectly even. Allow it to dry completely.

    • 4). Apply a coat of semi-gloss latex paint over the primer, using a clean paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry completely, then apply a second coat. The paint coats should go on thin and evenly. Allow the second coat to dry completely.

    • 5). Apply two coats of clear varnish with a clean paintbrush after the paint is completely dry. Allow the varnish to dry between coats. Let the varnish dry and cure for five days before using the table and chairs.

    • 6). Replace the seat bottoms by setting them in place and replacing the screws.
