How to Finish Good Wood

    • 1). Wipe sawdust from the fine wood surface using tack cloths.

    • 2). Protect areas adjacent to the fine wood with professional painter's tape. Place drop cloths beneath the wood.

    • 3). Use a 2- to 3-inch natural-bristled paintbrush to apply gel stain to the wood. Brush along with the grain of the fine wood. Wait four to six minutes, and then wipe the gel stain from the wood using clean rags. Wait four hours for the fine wood to dry.

    • 4). Wash gel stain from your natural-bristled paintbrush using mineral spirits.

    • 5). Coat the fine wood with varnish using the clean brush. Brush along with the grain of the fine wood, applying only a thin coat to prevent unwanted sagging. Wait four hours for the fine wood to dry.
