How Does a Glow Plug Get Power?

    Ignition Source

    • A glow plug typically receives its power from a 1.5-volt source called a glow plug igniter. These igniters apply heat to start the glow plug. The igniter is placed on top of the glow plug and pushed on. The engine is then started, and the igniter may be left in place for a short period of time until the engine reaches operating temperature.

    Maintaining Heat

    • Unlike automotive spark plugs, a glow plug does not need to continuously receive bursts of energy to create sparks and ignite fuel. A glow plug remains hot after the initial ignition by the internal combustion of the engine. The glow plug then supplies energy to heat the fuel to combustion temperatures, maintaining the cycle.

    Glow Plug Types

    • There are several different types of glow plugs. The main differences are heat ratings. Each plug is designed to burn at a different temperature. This will affect engine performance and efficiency. The manufacturers of RC engines specify the types of glow plugs needed for their engines to run at peak performance.
