New Fuel Ideas

    Anything Fuel

    • Changing World Technologies, an environmental technologies company, has found a way to turn any carbon-based waste into combustible fuel. Through thermo-depolymeritization--which mimics the Earth's way of changing waste into fossil fuels but shaves millions of years off its development time--wastes are mixed with water and heated to 500 degrees F, pressurized at 600 lb.per square inch and cooked for 15 to 60 minutes until the organic matter's molecular structure begins to break apart. With more heat, then distillation, creates byproducts like crude oil for refineries and other minerals used in fertilizers. Just about anything can be used for this: for instance, 100 pounds of tires yields 44 pounds of oil; 65 pounds of medical waste would create 30 pounds of oil. This process is still being perfected but could be a way of the future.

    Hydrogen Fuel Cells

    • Hydrogen has long been thought to be the replacement to oil, as it creates a tremendous amount of energy when it is extracted from water. This energy can be stored in a fuel cell, which cleanly produces electricity that can power homes and especially automobiles. The only pollutant, if you want to call it that, is water vapor, not carbon dioxide like gas produces. This helps to lower greenhouse gas emissions. While hydrogen cars are limited on the market and hard to fix and fuel--as new fuel cells must be purchased, as well as refined hydrogen for fuel--there are hydrogen fuel car kits that can be installed on your gas-powered automobile and nearly double your gas mileage.

    Electric Cars

    • Imagine being able to plug your car in when you get home from work, rather then having to go to the gas station ever again. That may soon become a reality. Cars like the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf have been prototyped and are estimated to get a whopping 230 to 360 miles per gallon. With that type of mileage for cars, gas could really become a thing of the past, though some people wonder what kind of strain this would put on the environment through electricity usage by everyone. Still, electricity as a new fuel idea should be something that everyone should seriously investigate.
