- 1). Drill the hole in the drawer knob out to 4 mm. Thread the steel bolt tightly into the knob.
- 2). Cut off the head of the bolt cleanly with the hack saw. Score a groove around the bolt about 1/2 inch from the end and large enough to hold the O-ring with the hack saw.
- 3). Drill into the end of the bolt about 1/4-inch with the 3-mm drill bit to form a cavity. This will hold the tinder. This completes the plunger of the fire piston.
- 4). Place the O-ring onto the groove in the end of the bolt. This will provide the seal in the fire piston.
- 5). Drill a 6-mm hole, 4 inches deep into the center of the end of the hardwood dowel. This completes the cylinder of the fire piston.
- 6). Insert some tinder into the cavity in the end of the plunger. Insert the end of the plunger into the hole in the hardwood cylinder so the O-ring fits into the hole.
- 7). Press down firmly and quickly to compress the air in the cylinder, then quickly remove the plunger from the cylinder. The tinder ignites and forms a glowing coal that you can then remove and use to start your kindling burning.
