Beat Winter Blues

It is right about this time of the year that I begin to get really sick of winter.
Of course, it did not help that we got two feet of snow dumped on us earlier in the week.
I can honestly say I am ready for spring! Many people struggle with depression this time of year for just this reason.
The winter seems to drag on, skies are cloudy and gray, and we feel a little cooped up in our homes.
If you are struggling to keep your spirits up, try one of the suggestions below for beating the winter blues.
Journal Those who write about their feelings when they are sad or depressed tend to deal with problems better than those who do not.
It is important to face your problems head on and get to the bottom of them.
Take 15 minutes a day to reflect on how you are feeling.
Avoid alcohol When you are feeling blue you might be tempted to have a drink or two, but alcohol actually makes you more depressed.
It is a great time of year for a cup of hot cocoa! Change things up If sitting inside night after night after work is getting a bit old, schedule something new.
Meet up with friends for appetizers or for dinner.
Join a book club or another group that interests you.
Get fresh air Take time to exercise, even if it means going outside in the cold.
Exercise releases endorphins, the body's natural antidepressants.
If you still have snow this time of year you can knock two birds out with one stone by going out and shoveling.
Show thanks Remind yourself that you really do have a great life.
Be grateful for the wonderful things you have and all the positive things you have going for you.
Call friends that will be supportive and make you feel less lonely.
Tell them how glad you are for their friendship.
Do not forget the most important thing - in a little over two weeks it will officially be spring; the sun will rise a little earlier, set a little later, and eventually the days will get warmer.
