- 1). Work out as much burnt residue as you can with your fingers, brushing and rubbing it away while shaking the pipe over the trash. Blow into the mouthpiece of the pipe to clear out some of the debris. This will remove the largest of the chunks of ash and soot.
- 2). Rinse the pipe under warm running water. Keep the faucet running at a low volume, because high pressure could cause the glass to break. Run water into the bowl, rubbing at the bowl with your finger as you do so. Plug the mouthpiece hole and vent hole, then let water run through the bowl into the inside of the pipe, filling it partially. Still plugging the holes with your finger, shake the pipe gently to slosh the water around inside, then pour it out. Repeat this process until the water runs clear.
- 3). Mix a solution of 1 part water and 1 part rubbing alcohol. Mix enough of this solution so you can submerge your pipe in it completely.
- 4). Soak the pipe in the alcohol solution for about 20 minutes. Repeat the rinsing process at the sink to remove any debris that loosened during the soaking process.
- 5). Scrub the pipe with pipe cleaners. Bend the end of a cleaner into a round nub to scrub out the bowl, pressing the nub between your fingertip and the bowl and working it gently back and forth against the glass. Scrub out the inside of the pipe by inserting the pipe cleaner into the mouthpiece hole and pushing it as far as it will go, then gently moving it back and forth inside the channel.
- 6). Rinse the pipe again.
- 7). Repeat step 5 with a clean pipe cleaner. Repeat rinsing and scrubbing as needed until the pipe is clean.
