- 1). Mark the floor with two intersecting lines going from wall to wall in both directions, using your chalk snapline.
- 2). Apply thinset mortar over the intersection with your notched trowel, laying enough mortar to encompass four to six tiles.
- 3). Press your tiles into place using the lines as guides. Put 1/16 inch spacers between them. Spread more thinset mortar and lay more tiles, building out from the middle toward the walls, using the spacers between all the tiles.
- 4). Stop after every four or five tiles and lay your straight 2-by-4 over them, with the narrow edge down. Press down firmly on the board, to get the tile surfaces even with one another.
- 5). Measure and cut the tiles at the edges (by the walls) using your wet saw. Let the tiles set overnight.
- 6). Pull out the tile spacers. Apply your unsanded grout in sections of four to six square feet, starting in one corner and using your squeegee. Run the squeegee across the tile face to squeeze the grout down into the lines. For each section, let the grout sit in the lines for 5 to 10 minutes, then wipe off the excess with a damp sponge.
