How to Dig Leach Fields

    • 1). Find a location suitable to the required specifications of your local code as well as the requirements of the manufacturer. The soil must be able to soak up waste water effectively. Once you have found a location suitable for excavation, measure the ground and place a stake at each of the four corners of the section to be excavated.

    • 2). Measure on a long wooden stake the depth of the leach field with your laser leveler, according to specifications. Mark the stake with a piece of chalk or spray paint.

    • 3). Hammer the long wooden stake into one of the sides of the marked section until the hash is parallel to the ground. This marks the depth of the leach field. Break ground with your shovel and pickax and dig the trench. Stop every five feet or so to measure your depth.

    • 4). Dig additional channels as needed, depending on the composition of the soil. All leach fields are designed to allow for waste water management. If the soil has a clay-like consistency, use your rake to dig an additional inch reservoir around the perimeter of the trench so the water channels or pools there to wait to be absorbed in the ground. If your soil has more sand or caliche in its composition, this step is not required.

    • 5). Insert wooden planks on the floor of the pit once the leach field trench is complete. This will reduce the amount of wear from walking on the soil. Your leach field is complete and you can begin installing the pipes for your septic system.
