A Tiger Tour to Meet the Tigers of India

The Tiger is possibly one of the most iconic animals on our planet. With its stunning markings, incredible size and intense grace, spotting one of these elusive big cats is a very special and somewhat humbling experience. India, and particularly the northern rural part, is one of the few places in the world where the big cat roams freely in a protected habitat, with little risk from poachers. In an effort to maintain this protective environment India has set up several reserves under the protection of Project Tiger, with the aim of exposing the plight of these incredible creatures and educating people about the importance of their survival.

Take a tiger tour in India

There are some excellent companies offering trips focussed on spotting wildlife and, specifically, the Tiger. Tour options provide a range of trips that focus solely on the wildlife or trips that combine a whole host of experiences, including cultural excursions and wildlife watching.

Two of India's most famous reserves are Kanha and Pench, and for the ultimate wildlife enthusiast a visit to these two reserves is the perfect way to maximise chances of spotting the elusive creature. The reserves are situated close together in Madhya Pradesh with an airport conveniently located close by. A few days can be spent in each reserve, taking game drives into the Indian jungle twice a day and making the most of the sighting opportunities. Being relatively small and undiscovered reserves, Kanha and Pench are ideal places for a Tiger tour. Once you have left the lodge in the morning you get a real sense of being at one with the jungle. The sound of the bird song is heightened and the calls of the deer and squawk of the monkeys ring loud and clear through the trees.

Game drives take place twice a day: early in the morning and later in the afternoon. All game drives are accompanied by a wildlife expert who is there to answer questions and help you make the most of your Tiger tour. The big cats are nomadic in nature and require a huge area of territory in which to roam. The ecosystem that supports their survival is intricate and complex, and the parks comprise areas of grassland, forest, rocky outcrops and lakes. This environment is also home to a huge range of other wonderful animals that add to the outstanding wildlife experience offered in the reserves.

Spending a few days in the reserves, you are likely to come across Wild Dog, Wild Boar, Golden Jackal, plenty of deer, lots of monkeys and an incredible array of birdlife. The reserve simply buzzes with activity from dawn until dusk. By taking a game drive at different times of the day you will maximise your chances of sighting the animals and have the opportunity to experience the reserve at varying times, when its activity, scenery and atmosphere can change drastically.

Close to Pench and Kanha is another, lesser-known reserve, Tadoba. Currently this place can boast some of the best Tiger sightings in India, with some companies now offering optional excursions to visit the reserve. If the chance is offered, take it and you will not be disappointed. It certainly makes a special addition to any Tiger tour.
